1. CONCEPT: The initial meeting with the client is to discuss preliminary ideas and aspirations for their garden. The designer’s portfolio can be viewed at this stage and further discussions form the brief for the project.

2. SITE SURVEY: Before the design can begin, a full survey of the site, including soil analysis and measurements, is required. Larger sites will require a full landscape survey. Extensive photographs are taken to assist design.

3. DESIGN & DRAWINGS: The presentation drawings will give the client a clearer view of the design. A scale sketch plan, section elevations and perspective drawings give an artistic feel to the project. CAD drawings and computer modelling provide a digital 3D impression. A mood board creates a feel to the concept.

4. CONSTRUCTION DETAIL: On agreement of the design, more detailed drawings are undertaken. Computer drawn for accuracy and clarity, the setting out plans, re-contouring (if required), material choices and drainage detail form instructions for the contractors.

5. PLANTING PLAN: The planting plan is the penultimate design stage. A detailed planting plan will show the exact placement of plants in the garden.

6. TENDERS: Full tender documentation including construction specification is arranged for the contractors. The complete package including previous drawings is put to tender.

Once the project is underway, you can commission Robert Huie to manage the contract, which involves site visits to ensure the smooth running of the build, and signing off and certification of completed works.

7. AFTERCARE: On completion of your garden, professional gardeners can be sourced and plant manuals prepared for aftercare.
